Haryana: CRSU staff harassment case reaches women’s panel

Women's Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia ordered an inquiry

News Arena Network - Chandigarh - UPDATED: March 5, 2025, 08:16 PM - 2 min read

A complaint of misbehaviour against former CRSU exam branch employee Anil Kumari has reached the Haryana Women’s Commission.

The complaint is against university assistant Praveen Bhaker, former Controller of Examinations Nihal Singh, and staff member Jarnail Singh. Women’s Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia has assigned the investigation to Professor Nisha Diopa, who heads the university’s women’s cell.

Allegations of threats and harassment

Anil Kumari, a former assistant in CRSU’s exam branch, had filed a complaint with the Vice-Chancellor on January 9. She alleged that on October 23, university employee Jarnail Singh asked her to sign an altered answer sheet where a student’s marks had been wrongfully increased.

When she refused, he threatened her. CCTV footage reportedly shows him hitting the table while intimidating her.

Later, Jarnail Singh reported her refusal to the then Controller of Examinations, Nihal Singh, who also pressured her to sign the document. Anil Kumari alleged that Praveen Bhaker, an assistant at the university and a PhD student, was aware of the incident.

He was reportedly close to former Vice-Chancellor Ranpal Singh.

When she refused to comply, both Praveen Bhaker and Nihal Singh allegedly misbehaved with her. Nihal Singh even called security to remove her from the office.

Eventually, she was transferred from the exam branch, which she described as a humiliating experience, especially in front of her son. Despite her complaint, no action was taken.

Women’s commission orders investigation

On Wednesday, Anil Kumari personally met Women’s Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia at a Women's Day event at CRSU. She submitted a copy of her complaint to the Vice-Chancellor.

Taking the matter seriously, Renu Bhatia directed Professor Nisha Diopa, head of CRSU’s women’s cell, to investigate and submit a report soon.

Officials to face inquiry

With the Women’s Commission stepping in, former Controller of Examinations Nihal Singh, assistant Praveen Bhaker, and employee Jarnail Singh will now face an official inquiry. Given that the investigation is under the direct orders of Chairperson Renu Bhatia, legal consequences for the accused officials could escalate.
