Haryana declares restricted holiday for Eid, not gazetted

The Haryana government has reclassified Eid-ul-Fitr from a gazetted holiday to a restricted holiday, citing the financial year-end closure. However, Muslim employees will still have the option to take leave on the day.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

The Haryana government has revised its holiday schedule, changing Eid-ul-Fitr from a gazetted holiday to a restricted holiday.

The decision, attributed to the financial year-end closure, allows Muslim employees to take leave if they wish to observe the festival but keeps government offices operational on the day.

According to an official order issued by Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, the notification dated December 26, 2024, has been partially amended.

The revised directive states that Eid-ul-Fitr, which falls on March 31, will now be categorised as a restricted holiday instead of a gazetted holiday. The change was influenced by the financial year-end, as March 29 and 30 fall on a weekend, and March 31 marks the closing of the 2024-25 fiscal year.

The order has been circulated to all government departments.

With this modification, all government offices in Haryana will remain open on Eid-ul-Fitr. However, Muslim employees or those who wish to take leave for the festival can do so under the restricted holiday provision.

This means that while Eid will not be observed as a mandatory holiday, individuals can opt for leave if required. A restricted holiday (RH) is an optional leave that employees may choose to take based on personal or religious preferences.

Unlike a gazetted holiday (GH), which mandates a public holiday where offices, banks, and institutions remain closed, a restricted holiday does not apply to all employees and does not disrupt normal office operations.

Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated across India on March 31. Given that the date coincides with the financial year-end, the Reserve Bank of India has also canceled its holiday on this day to ensure compliance with regulatory deadlines and financial closures.
