The Haryana government has established district-level committees, led by deputy commissioners, to manage and secure the supply of commercial LPG for essential services such as hospitals, schools, and hostels. This move comes as the central government focuses on prioritising fuel for domestic households and critical infrastructure while tightening the supply available to non-essential commercial businesses, including restaurants.
Under these new directives, issued by Raja Sekhar Vundru, the Additional Chief Secretary for Food and Civil Supplies, deputy commissioners have also been granted the authority to prioritise the allotment of commercial cylinders for wedding functions based on local demand and urgency. These committees are expected to be well-rounded, typically including the superintendent of police, the chief medical officer, and the district education officer, with the district food and supplies controller serving as the member secretary.
In order to ensure the smooth functioning of the system, the district food and supplies controllers have been entrusted with the responsibility of directly coordinating with the oil marketing firms to ensure the availability of a reserve of 20 per cent of the LPG stock. The chief minister, Mr. Nayab Singh Saini, has recently addressed the public to calm their nerves about the fuel shortage, stating that although the tensions in West Asia have given rise to the rumour of petrol, diesel, and domestic gas being affected, the state has taken proactive measures to ensure stability in the region.
