In a significant political development, workers from the Haryana Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) and the Congress joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini. The Chief Minister personally welcomed the new members into the party.
Former MP Mamata Mahanta joins BJP
Earlier in the week, former Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Mahanta joined the BJP, shortly after resigning from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). Mahanta, who belongs to the Kudumi tribal community of Mayurbhanj, emphasized her dedication to public service. "My only aim is the service and welfare of the public. It can be fulfilled only by joining the BJP," she stated upon her induction into the party.
Haryana's political landscape ahead of polls
Haryana is gearing up for legislative assembly elections later this year, making these political shifts particularly noteworthy. In the 2019 Haryana Assembly polls, the BJP secured 40 seats, the Congress won 31 seats, the JJP garnered 10 seats, and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) managed just 1 seat. For the upcoming elections, the INLD and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have announced a joint contest.
Expectations
The Haryana Assembly Elections 2024 are expected to take place on or before October 2024, as the current Assembly’s tenure ends on November 3 this year. However, the official election schedule has yet to be announced.
