The Haryana Police on Monday announced the arrest of one suspect in connection with the murder of 23-year-old Congress worker Himani Narwal, whose body was discovered inside a suitcase near Sampla bus stand along the Rohtak-Delhi highway on 1 March.
A Haryana Police official confirmed the arrest to PTI, stating, “We have arrested one accused and further investigations are on.”
On Sunday, the police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder. Four teams of the Rohtak Police had been deployed to trace the perpetrators.
Narwal, a resident of Vijay Nagar in Rohtak, bore visible injury marks, raising suspicions of a violent crime. Her untimely death has sparked outrage, with her family refusing to perform her last rites until all those responsible are brought to justice.
Her grieving mother, Savita, alleged that political rivalry within the party might have played a role in her daughter’s murder.
“It could be anyone in the party who was jealous about her rise or it could be anyone else,” she said, standing beside her son Jatin.
Narwal was a dedicated member of the Congress and had actively participated in the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi. She was also pursuing a law degree and had been involved in party activities for nearly a decade, according to Haryana Congress leaders.

Savita recounted her last conversation with her daughter on 27 February.
“She had said she would be busy with a party programme the next day, but later her phone was found switched off,” she told PTI. The bereaved mother, who had travelled from Delhi to Rohtak upon hearing the tragic news, lamented that she had already lost a son to violence years ago. “Even then I did not get justice,” she said.
Her brother Jatin recalled that the family was informed about her murder on Saturday afternoon. The family’s refusal to perform her last rites has intensified demands for a thorough and speedy investigation.
Haryana Congress leaders have condemned the killing, with former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda calling it an indication of the state’s worsening law and order situation.
“Most unsafe state for women,” he remarked, urging authorities to ensure justice for the bereaved family.
As the investigation unfolds, political circles in Haryana remain on edge, with growing calls for swift action to apprehend all those involved in the shocking crime.
