Haryana is likely to appoint a new Director General of Police (DGP) in the New Year as three senior police officers are set to retire at the end of December.

Current DGP Om Prakash Singh, DG Akeel Mohammed, and DG (Prisons) Alok Rai will retire on December 31, opening the door for a new appointment at the top of the state police force, the release said.

Along with the new DGP’s appointment, a major reshuffle in the Haryana Police is also expected in the coming days. The Haryana government has sent a panel of five IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the selection of the next DGP.

IPS officers Alok Mittal and Ajay Singhal are said to be among the leading contenders for the top post. On October 14, IPS officer Om Prakash Singh took charge as the Haryana DGP after reporting at the police headquarters in Panchkula.

Singh was given additional charge as DGP after his predecessor, Shatrujeet Kapur, was placed on leave amid an ongoing investigation into the death of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who was found dead under suspicious conditions at his Chandigarh residence on October 7.

Before taking charge, Singh served as the Managing Director of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation (HPHC).

During his tenure at the corporation, significant progress was made in the construction of police residential and administrative buildings across the state.
He also introduced several initiatives aimed at improving police welfare, boosting operational efficiency, and modernising infrastructure.
