Haryana is set to witness the launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered train, marking a major step towards clean and green rail transport in the country.

According to a statement issued by the Haryana government on Tuesday, Northern Railway’s ambitious project, which will run between Jind and Sonipat, is now in its final stage of preparation.

An uninterrupted 11 kV power supply has been ensured for the hydrogen plant set up in Jind. This plant will give fuel to the hydrogen train during its final commissioning as well as for regular operations.

The hydrogen plant developed for the project has a storage capacity of 3,000 kilograms and has entered its final commissioning phase, the statement said.

Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi recently held a review meeting with officials of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN). He ordered that regular  monitoring of the power supply system be carried out to ensure the project faces no disruption.

Rastogi also stressed the need to strengthen alternative power arrangements and ensure quick response mechanisms to handle any technical issues.

Last month, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Lok Sabha in a written reply that Indian Railways has taken up a pilot project to run the country’s first hydrogen-powered train.

He stated that the proposed operations are based on specifications laid down by the Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to demonstrate hydrogen train technology in India.

He added that "Manufacturing of the Hydrogen Train-set has been completed. For providing hydrogen for use in this train-set, a hydrogen plant has been conceived at Jind. In this plant, hydrogen is being produced using electrolysis process, which is a key element of green hydrogen generation.”
