Uttarakhand Police have apprehended a youth from Ambala in Haryana for allegedly threatening to blow up several police stations in the state through an Instagram post, a senior police officer said on Monday.
Dehradun City SP Parmod Kumar said the threat was posted on June 21 through an Instagram account. The post claimed that multiple police stations in Uttarakhand would be targeted on June 25.
Police registered a case soon after the threat surfaced and launched an investigation. Cyber experts tracked the accused by analysing his digital footprints, the officer said.
The investigation led police to Jaspreet, a resident of Ambala. A police team conducted a raid after identifying him.
SP Kumar said the accused had contacted some lawyers and was planning to surrender. Acting on this information, the police arrested him on Sunday evening before he could do so. He said Jaspreet was produced before a court on Monday in accordance with legal procedure.
During questioning, the accused allegedly told investigators that he had been influenced by certain organisations. Police also said the social media post was linked to the recent Karnprayag incident. The arrest comes days after threatening messages circulated on social media, claiming that all police stations in Uttarakhand would be blown up on June 25.
Earlier, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Navneet Singh had said security agencies also received a threatening email targeting important public places.
"On June 24, we received a threatening email. The sender of the email has threatened to blow up the place with a bomb. We have received such emails before as well. Since yesterday, our BDS, dog squad, municipal corporation office, Har Ki Pauri and big temples have been being continuously checked. The cyber cell is investigating the mail. That IP address is being identified," SSP Singh said.
On June 25, Dehradun City SP Parmod Kumar had said police had received several bomb threats through emails and social media warning of attacks on government offices. A case was registered immediately, and the Special Task Force (STF) joined the investigation while security checks were intensified across the city.
