The Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday heard the petition filed by Chief Minister Hemant Soren challenging the MP/MLA Special Court’s order that rejected his request for exemption from personal appearance in a summons-related case. During the hearing, the state government sought additional time from the court.
The High Court, while cancelling its interim order passed earlier on December 4, 2024, directed the Ranchi MP/MLA Court to continue with the trial proceedings in the case.
On December 4, 2024, the High Court had granted interim relief to Hemant Soren by allowing exemption from personal appearance before the MP/MLA Court in connection with the summons violation case.
The Chief Minister had approached the High Court seeking to set aside the earlier order of the lower court.
Earlier, the MP/MLA Special Court had rejected Soren’s plea filed under Section 205 of the CrPC, in which he sought exemption from appearing personally before the court.
The trial court had directed him to be present in person. Challenging this decision, Soren moved the High Court seeking its cancellation.
The summons proceedings case arises from a complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate, which accused Hemant Soren of failing to comply with ED summons in a money-laundering investigation.
The ED had complained that the Jharkhand Chief Minister had ignored its summons more than 10 times and had not appeared before it for investigation into an alleged money laundering case.
