The Punjab government has approached the High Court, filing a habeas corpus petition challenging the alleged unlawful detention of prominent farmer leaders Jagjit Singh Dallewal, Sarwan Singh Pandher, and several others.
The petition argues that their arrests were carried out without any legal justification, making them illegal.
In a significant development, the High Court took up the matter late in the evening and issued a notice to the Punjab government, seeking its response on the issue. The court has also directed Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a status report regarding the detention of the farmer leaders by Monday, March 25.
The petition has been filed by Gurmukh Singh, President of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) Doaba, who contended that Jagjit Singh Dallewal had been taken into custody without any prior notice or a valid reason, rendering the detention unlawful.
The petitioner has, therefore, urged the High Court to order Dallewal’s immediate release.
Responding to the petition, the High Court has issued formal notices to the Punjab government and the state DGP, directing them to file a detailed response and status report by Monday. The court's intervention is expected to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the detention of the farmer leaders.
The detention of key farmer representatives has sparked widespread concern within Punjab’s agricultural community, particularly at a time when farmers' protests and demands continue to remain a pressing issue in the state.
The High Court’s decision on this matter is likely to have significant implications for the ongoing farmers' movement.
