The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought a response from the Punjab Government on a plea filed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) seeking compensation for losses suffered due to unauthorised closures of toll plazas in the state.
The NHAI has accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order, leading to protests and closures of toll plazas by farmer union activists. The activists have been protesting against frequent toll hikes, alleging inadequate facilities.
The court has issued a notice to the Punjab Government, seeking its response on the matter.
The NHAI has claimed that toll plazas were illegally closed for various periods in 2022-2023 and 2024, resulting in significant losses to the central exchequer.
The authority has cited a clause in the State Support Agreement, which holds the state liable for compensating damages/losses suffered due to their defaults. The NHAI has argued that the state's failure to ensure the smooth functioning of toll plazas has breached the agreement.
The court has sought a response from the Punjab Government on the matter, with the next hearing scheduled for a later date.
