The Allahabad High Court has scheduled the next hearing in the ongoing Krishna Janmabhoomi and Shahi Idgah mosque dispute in Mathura for October 9.

Justice Ram Manohar Narain Mishra fixed the date on Friday after hearing submissions from counsels for the respective parties, during which various applications and objections were reviewed.

The protracted controversy centres on the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb-era Shahi Idgah mosque, which the Hindu side alleges was constructed after demolishing a temple at the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The Hindu petitioners have filed 18 suits in total, seeking possession of the land, the removal of the mosque structure, the restoration of the temple, and a permanent injunction.

The High Court, crucially, had already delivered a significant ruling on August 1, 2024. It rejected applications by the Muslim side that challenged the maintainability of the Hindu worshippers' suits, deeming all the suits maintainable.

In that same order, the court also held that the litigation was not barred by the Limitation Act, the Waqf Act, or the Places of Worship Act, 1991, which prohibits the conversion of any religious structure as it existed on August 15, 1947.
