The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday ruled that the detention of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal is legal, dismissing a petition filed by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Doaba) that alleged he was being held unlawfully.
Dallewal, a prominent leader in the farmers' movement, is currently under the care of the Punjab Police while receiving treatment at a private hospital.
Various farmer organisations have been actively demanding his release, asserting that he was being detained without legal grounds. Seeking relief, they had approached the High Court, contending that his custody was illegal.
During the hearing, the court rejected these claims, stating that Dallewal’s detention adhered to legal procedures and was not unlawful. It further clarified that there was no violation of his rights in the matter.
In a significant directive, the High Court instructed the Punjab Government to ensure that Dallewal’s family members, close relatives, or any individual wishing to meet him at the hospital be granted unrestricted access. This ruling ensures that he remains accessible to his well-wishers despite being under police watch.

The petition was submitted by Gurmukh Singh, president of BKU (Doaba), who argued that Dallewal’s detention was unjustified.
However, the Punjab Government countered this claim, informing the court that no criminal case had been registered against Dallewal. Instead, he had been admitted to Park Hospital with his full consent to receive necessary medical care.
After evaluating arguments from both sides, the High Court concluded that Dallewal’s custody was lawful and that there were no grounds for interference. The petition was accordingly dismissed, bringing clarity to the ongoing legal dispute over his detention.
