Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on party defectors and critics, asserting that her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, was being unfairly targeted as an excuse by those leaving the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Speaking during a live session on social media, Banerjee adopted an aggressive yet emotional tone while addressing the ongoing turmoil within the party.
Strongly defending Abhishek Banerjee, she dismissed the allegations against him as politically motivated. "Abhishek is fighting like a tiger. He has suddenly become a villain for some, but that is merely an excuse to justify their exit," she said, referring to the multiple cases filed against him.
Mamata said that despite facing legal pressure, Abhishek had refused to "bow down" and continued to fight. She described him as a leader who would shape the country's politics in the coming decades.
She also alleged that the BJP was using central agencies and law enforcement to intimidate TMC workers. "The message being sent is clear—either align with them or face jail," she claimed.
Acknowledging discontent within sections of the party, Mamata folded her hands in apology to the public, admitting that some leaders who had risen through the party's ranks had undisclosed issues. She said those now switching sides out of fear of investigative agencies were free to leave, adding that grassroots workers who had made sacrifices for the party remained its "true strength."
Mamata also recalled her political journey, saying she founded the party in 1998 with minimal support and, at one point, stood alone in Parliament. She said struggle had defined her political career and expressed confidence in rebuilding the party if required. "I have risen every time, and I can start again if needed," she said.
Referring to the recent resignation of MLA Madan Mitra from party posts and his shift towards the rebel camp led by Ritabrata Banerjee, Mamata said she had anticipated the move after receiving a message from him stating that his family had been summoned by investigative agencies. She maintained that he had already been relieved of his responsibilities and dismissed his current claims as lacking substance.
The TMC chief reiterated that defections would not weaken the party, stressing that loyalty and long-term commitment mattered more than numbers. She urged supporters to focus on strengthening the organisation ahead of the July 21 Martyrs' Day rally.
"It makes no difference who leaves," Mamata said. "The party stands on the strength of its workers and the support of millions. No one can silence my voice until this fight is over."
