A deadly heatwave continues to ravage India, claiming lives and overwhelming healthcare facilities.

In Bihar’s Aurangabad district, 16 people succumbed to heat-related illnesses within a span of two hours on Thursday.

The district hospital recorded the deaths as temperatures soared to an unprecedented 48.2 degrees Celsius, setting a new state record.

Dr. Rajesh Kumar, attending physician at the hospital, reported that at least 35 more patients were admitted with severe heatstroke symptoms. "We have enough doctors, medicines, and ice packs. Additional coolers have also been arranged to combat the heat," Dr. Kumar assured.

The heatwave has prompted the Bihar government to order the closure of all private and government-run schools, coaching institutes, and anganwadi centres until June 8.

This decision followed multiple incidents of students fainting due to the oppressive heat. In Sheikhpura district, 16 girls collapsed at a government school.

With no ambulances available, they were transported to the hospital on two-wheelers and e-rickshaws.

Similar reports emerged from Begusarai and Jamui, exacerbating public outcry. RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav criticized the state government’s handling of the crisis.

"There is no democracy or government in Bihar, only bureaucracy. Why is the Chief Minister so weak? The temperature is 47 degrees. Doctors say children must be protected, yet schools are open," Yadav stated.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave alert for the next two days in Bihar, intensifying concerns for public safety.

Meanwhile, Odisha is also grappling with the heatwave's deadly toll. At the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH), at least 10 people are suspected to have died from heat-related illnesses on Thursday.

Official sources confirmed that eight were declared dead upon arrival, while two others succumbed during treatment. The exact causes of death will be determined after post-mortem examinations, scheduled for Friday.

Sudharani Pradhan, superintendent in charge of RGH, noted that the deaths were reported within a six-hour period starting at 2 pm.

"Some patients had body temperatures between 103 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Given the severe heatwave, we suspect heat-related illnesses as the cause. However, confirmation awaits the post-mortem results," Pradhan explained.

With temperatures expected to remain dangerously high, authorities are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and take necessary precautions to prevent heatstroke.
