Heatwave scorches Tripura, rain wreaks havoc in Mizoram

Tripura closes schools from April 24-27 due to heatwave; Mizoram hit by heavy rain, hailstorm damaging over 450 houses, officials report.

Contrasting images from two neighbouring states in India's northeast where Tripura is facing severe heatwaves while Mizoram is reeling from extremely heavy rains causing disruption to normal life.


With Tripura reeling under heatwave conditions, the government ordered that all schools in the state will remain closed from April 24 to 27, an official said on Wednesday. 

 

Meanwhile, over 450 houses were damaged as heavy rains accompanied by a hailstorm lashed parts of Mizoram, officials said on Tuesday.

 

An IMD bulletin said the state recorded 37 degrees Celsius which is around 3 degrees Celsius more than the normal level on Wednesday. The temperature may go up to 39 degrees Celsius by the end of the current week in the northeastern state.

 

"It has been decided that all the schools - government, government aided and private will remain closed from April 24 to 27", said Additional Secretary in Education (School) Department, N C Sharma.

 

"The entire state is reeling under heatwave conditions and this condition will continue for some more days. Given this heatwave and humid weather the state government has declared it a state-specific disaster," said another official.

 

He said the district-level disaster management authorities were advised to conduct awareness among the public.

 

The district administration has also been asked to activate the emergency centres, and quick response teams and ensure uninterrupted power supply to all areas for the safety of the people of the state.

 

The official further informed that an advisory has been issued by the Revenue Department asking people not to go out in the sun specifically between 10 am to 3 pm. 

 

Officials from the Imphal district administration on Tuesday informed that over 450 houses were damaged as heavy rains accompanied by a hailstorm lashed parts of Mizoram late on Monday.

 

Aizawl, Kolasib, Champhai and Khawzawl districts were the hardest hit in the calamity that struck the state over the last two days, they said.

 

In Kolasib district, which borders Assam, at least 265 houses were damaged and over 13,900 people were affected by the rains and hailstorm, an official of the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department said.

 

Besides, an Anganwadi centre and some government buildings were also damaged there, he said. Kolasib town and Thingdawl village were the worst affected in the Kolasib district, he added.

 

At least 178 houses were damaged in the Aizawl district, officials said. A woman was also injured in Falkawn village. She was admitted to the Zoram Medical College and Hospital, they said.

 

Several houses were also damaged in North Khawbung, Kahrawt and Bungzung villages in the Champhai district. 

 

Two churches and 10 houses were also damaged in the Khawzawl district, officials said.

 

Earlier this month, more than 2,500 houses, 15 churches, 17 schools and 11 refugee camps were damaged, and a woman was killed in a similar calamity.
