Rescue and relief operations have been intensified across the flood-affected twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri on Monday, with the search for missing persons still ongoing, officials said.
The flash floods triggered by heavy rain caused massive damage to both public and private infrastructure.
The disaster has left 11 people dead, five injured and eight missing.
On Monday, widespread parts of the Kashmir Valley received moderate to heavy rainfall, just two days after daytime temperatures had climbed to 36 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has predicted more moderate to heavy rain in the coming days, stating that the weather in Jammu and Kashmir has changed after nearly two weeks of hot and humid conditions.
The MeT department has also issued an advisory for people living in upper reaches and remote areas to stay away from landslide-prone zones and avoid travelling in hilly terrains.
The Srinagar administration has suspended Shikara operations on Dal Lake in view of the predicted heavy rainfall.
Jammu and Kashmir has reported nearly a dozen cloudbursts in the first half of 2026, with damages amounting to hundreds of crores.
Experts say multiple factors are responsible for this sudden temperature inversion and the occurrence of catastrophic events, including an unaccounted number of tourists visiting eco-sensitive zones, pollution, deforestation, rapid urbanisation and expansion of development activities near forests and protected areas.
On the Poonch and Rajouri flood situation, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said the administration had stepped up rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
LG Sinha said the situation in the affected districts was being monitored round the clock, with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), J&K Police, and other emergency agencies working in close coordination to evacuate stranded residents and provide relief to affected families.
