Continuous rain in Reasi and the upper catchment areas has increased the flow of water into the Salal reservoir. Authorities have opened all the gates of the dam to manage the increasing water level.
The rise in water inflow and the release from the dam have caused the Chenab River to swell. Strong currents and higher water levels have been reported in areas downstream.
Reasi has been receiving heavy rain for several hours, leading to a sharp increase in water flowing into the Chenab River and the Salal reservoir. Officials are closely monitoring the weather and the river's water level.
People living in low-lying areas and those near the Chenab River have been asked to remain cautious and avoid going close to the river.
Meanwhile, heavy rain began lashing Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district early Tuesday. The district administration and Rajouri Police have issued advisories asking residents to stay alert over the risk of rising river levels, flash floods, landslides and waterlogging.
The administration has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel while the heavy rain continues. Residents have also been told to stay away from rivers, streams and flood-prone areas and not to cross flooded roads or bridges. They have been advised to follow official weather updates and instructions.
People have been asked to stay indoors unless travel is necessary and to cooperate with the authorities. In an emergency, residents should contact the local administration or emergency services immediately.
Rajouri Police have also issued a warning that continued heavy rain could cause river levels in the district to rise quickly. The police advisory said the ongoing heavy rainfall in parts of Rajouri could lead to a rapid increase in water levels in local rivers.
