Incessant heavy rainfall has triggered massive landslides across several districts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi, forcing the closure of schools on Tuesday, officials said.
The rainfall has created a flood-like situation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district after the Dharhali and Saktoh Rivers witnessed a significant rise in water levels following incessant rainfall in the region, they said.
The district administration of Rajouri has ordered the closure of all government and private schools across the district for today.
While the precautionary measures are in place, the district administration is closely monitoring the situation, as continuous downpours have led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, disrupting normal life in the region.
Officials said, though no casualties have been reported so far from the rainfall-related mishaps, there has been minor infrastructure damage in some places.
Besides Rajouri, rainfall has also triggered landslides in Poonch, where one child reportedly lost his life after a school building was hit by the landslide.
In another incident, a pilgrim en route to Mata Vaishno Devi was killed when a massive landslide hit one of the tracks leading to the shrine compound in the Trikuta hills.
Meanwhile, the administration has issued advisories to the low-lying areas of several districts for potential flash floods.
