Moderate to heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Haryana and Punjab on Sunday, providing much-needed respite from the prevailing heatwave conditions. According to the Meteorological Department, the showers led to a dip in temperatures, easing the sultry weather across both states.
In Haryana, significant rainfall was recorded in several districts over the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am Sunday. Karnal received the highest rainfall at 118 mm, followed by Hisar with 73.9 mm, Kaithal 78 mm, Kurukshetra 65 mm, Jhajjar 40.5 mm, Gurugram 39.5 mm, Sirsa 39 mm, and Ambala 43 mm.
Punjab also witnessed rainfall, though relatively lighter. Amritsar recorded 13.2 mm, Pathankot 27 mm, Bathinda and Faridkot 16 mm each, Gurdaspur 36.8 mm, Ludhiana 3.2 mm, Patiala 8.9 mm, Ferozepur 3 mm, and Mohali 0.5 mm.
Chandigarh, the joint capital of both states, experienced light showers. The rains brought a noticeable drop in mercury levels, offering welcome relief to residents from the scorching temperatures.
Earlier on Saturday evening, severe weather struck multiple parts of Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh, causing damage and disruptions across the region.
In Haryana, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds impacted at least seven districts — Hisar, Fatehabad, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Jind, Kurukshetra, and Panchkula. In Fatehabad, stormwater accumulated up to a foot deep on key roads, hindering traffic movement. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a rain alert for Sunday in six districts: Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, and Kaithal. Panipat also witnessed early morning showers and gusty winds, though skies cleared later.
The storm system entered the region from Pakistan via Rajasthan and Punjab, prompting a red alert across 16 districts of Haryana overnight, including Gurugram, Mahendragarh, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Rewari, Jhajjar, Rohtak, Hisar, Fatehabad, Jind, Sonipat, Panipat, and Kaithal.
In Punjab, severe winds and rainfall damaged infrastructure in multiple cities. In Ludhiana, a wall collapse at a five-story building claimed one life and injured another. Strong winds in Amritsar toppled police barricades, while in Jalandhar, iron shuttering fell on vehicles near Namdev Chowk. Ferozepur experienced widespread power outages due to the storm. The Met Department issued a five-hour storm alert across Punjab on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district, a cloudburst hit the Jagatkhana panchayat around 6 pm. The resulting flood swept several roadside vehicles toward the banks of the Sutlej river, though no casualties were reported.
The intense weather across the region on Saturday paved the way for Sunday’s widespread rains, providing relief from the heat while highlighting the unpredictable nature of the season.
