The police in Amritsar, Punjab, have recovered 23 kg of heroin from Devi Daspura village. The drug consignment is linked to a smuggling network run by a US-based smuggler, Jasmit Singh, also known as Lucky.
Punjab's Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced the recovery on X, calling it a major success against cross-border drug smuggling.
The police identified Sahilpreet Singh, also known as Karan, a resident of Devi Daspura, as the person who retrieved the drugs. Multiple police teams are working to arrest him. A case under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act has been registered at Jandiala police station, and further investigations are underway.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Border Range, Satinder Singh, along with Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural, Maninder Singh, informed reporters that the police acted on a tip-off about the consignment. Acting quickly, Jandiala police launched an operation and found 23 packets of heroin, each weighing 1 kg, hidden in a jute bag in the village.
The investigation revealed that the arrested suspect was in direct contact with US-based smuggler Jasmit Singh, who arranged for the drugs to be sent. According to Punjab police, Jasmit Singh has a criminal history, with cases against him under the Arms Act and for attempted murder.
The police are now working to trace all links in the smuggling network and arrest those involved.
