On Monday, the Election Commission of India said it is ready to hold assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, noting that the Union Territory had its highest voter participation in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in four decades.
During a news conference in New Delhi to summarise the comprehensive seven-phase 2024 general elections, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar accentuated the commission's readiness to conduct assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said that "in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Jammu and Kashmir had the greatest voter participation in four decades, at 58.58%, while the Kashmir Valley had a turnout of 51.05%."
Kumar also said, "There was no major violent incident recorded during the polling, which in itself is a record, especially in Jammu and Kashmir."
The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections ended on June 1, with vote counting slated for the next day.
Exit polls on June 1 forecast a significant victory for the NDA led by PM Modi, with projections indicating over 350 seats for the alliance.
With increased security precautions, the vote-counting process has been finalised across the country, including in Jammu and Kashmir.
Exit polls for Jammu and Kashmir predicted that the National Conference would win all three Lok Sabha seats in the Kashmir Valley, the BJP two seats in the Jammu division, and the Congress the lone Lok Sabha seat in Leh.
