In the first phase of the panchayat elections in Uttarakhand, voter turnout stood at 68 per cent, officials said on Friday. Women voters turned out in large numbers with 73 per cent turnout, compared to 63 per cent among men.
The voting was peaceful and took place in 49 development blocks across 12 districts.
According to the State Election Commission, 17,829 candidates were in the fray for over 6,000 posts in gram panchayats, kshetra panchayats, and zila panchayats.
The high turnout showed strong public participation in grassroots democracy. The second phase of voting will be held on July 28, and final results will be announced on July 31.
