Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party Chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday expressed shock over a viral video showing Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar pulling down the veil (hijab) of a Muslim woman’s face during an event.
The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir raised questions about the mental health status of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, saying his old age cannot be used as an excuse to humiliate women.
“Having personally known and admired Nitish ji, I was shocked to see him pull down a young Muslim woman’s niqab. Does one attribute it to old age or the normalisation of humiliating Muslims publicly?” Mufti said in a post on X.
She said she was shocked to see the viral video in which Kumar was seen pulling down the face veil of a Muslim woman during a felicitation ceremony.
“The fact that people around him watched this horrific incident unfold as some form of entertainment is even more unsettling. Nitish Sahab, perhaps it’s time you step down,” she added.
She indirectly took a jibe at Nitish, considering him to be unfit for the office.
Mehbooba’s comments come amid ongoing discussions in Bihar about Kumar’s health and fitness for office, with opposition parties having previously raised similar concerns.
