Cyber fraudsters targeted the Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank by hacking into the bank’s server through a customer’s mobile phone.
According to reports, the attackers gained access to the mobile banking app of a customer of the bank’s Halti branch in Chamba district and withdrew Rs 11.55 crore. The stolen amount was then transferred to 20 different bank accounts.
The State Cyber Cell revealed that the incident took place on May 11 and 12 but came to light only on May 14. Due to a bank holiday, the bank was unable to receive the transaction report from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) immediately.
After the bank authorities discovered the fraud upon reviewing the transaction report received on May 14, they promptly filed a complaint at the Sadar Police Station in Shimla. The case was subsequently transferred to the Cyber Police Station, Shimla.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Cybercrime Mohit Chawla confirmed the incident and stated that a team from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) in Delhi is en route to Shimla to assist with the investigation.
He added that more details will emerge following a comprehensive investigation by the CERT-In team along with the state’s cyber commandos.
Meanwhile, bank officials have assured customers that their funds remain secure and confirmed that the amount involved in the fraudulent transactions has been frozen.
