Hundreds of residents from neighbouring Haryana held a demonstration on Monday against the Himachal Pradesh government over the hike in entry tax. The protesters demanded that toll tax be waived within a 5-km radius of the state border.
The protest took place at Barotiwala in Solan district and was led by local panchayat representatives and community leaders. Demonstrators raised slogans against the state government, opposing the decision to increase the entry tax.
During the protest, the agitators reportedly made the entry point toll-free for some time. Police teams from both Haryana and Himachal Pradesh reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Protesters said people living along the border share strong social and family ties with Himachal Pradesh and frequently travel to nearby religious places such as Haripur and Baba Balak Nath.
They claimed that the increased tax would place an additional financial burden on residents, especially those who cross the border regularly for work and daily needs.
The protesters warned that they would intensify their agitation and even block roads if the government failed to address their demands. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the state government through the Baddi Tehsildar.
Meanwhile, Baddi Tehsildar Jitender Thakur assured the protesters that their concerns would be forwarded to the state government for consideration.
