Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, a resident of Shahpur in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district, was martyred during Pakistani shelling in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir early Saturday morning. The Indian Army informed his family shortly after the incident.
According to Kangra district officials, the mortal remains of Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, who was serving in the 25 Punjab Regiment, are being taken from Poonch to Rajouri for post-mortem. Following the completion of formalities, the body will be brought by road to his hometown in Shahpur. The shelling reportedly occurred around 7:30 am.
The news of his death plunged Shahpur into deep mourning. Kumar hailed from a proud military family—his father, Garja Singh, is a retired Havildar of the Indian Army. Subedar Major Pawan Kumar is survived by his parents, wife, son, and daughter.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed grief over the loss, stating that Subedar Major Kumar’s supreme sacrifice in the defense of the nation’s unity and sovereignty would be remembered forever. He assured the bereaved family of all possible support from the state government in the hour of grief.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri also conveyed his condolences, describing Kumar as a courageous son of Shahpur who laid down his life in the line of duty. “Coming from a lineage of valour, he followed in the footsteps of his father Garja Singh, continuing a proud tradition of service to the nation,” he said.
“The nation will always remember and honour the courage and dedication of such gallant soldiers. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” he added.
