The number of snow leopards in Himachal has gone up in recent years. A study by the Himachal Pradesh Wildlife Wing and the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), Bengaluru, found that the population of snow leopards has increased to 83, compared to 51 in 2021.
The same study also recorded two new wild species in the state — the woolly flying squirrel and the Pallas’s cat. The survey was carried out over an area of 26,112 sq km.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Wildlife, Amitabh Gautam, said snow leopards in Himachal continue to face threats, but the Wildlife Wing has been working hard for their conservation. He added that many wild species are on the brink of extinction, and the Forest Department and Wildlife Wing are taking strong measures to protect them.
He stressed that wildlife conservation cannot succeed without public support. He urged local communities to work with the department to help save wildlife.
