Heavy rain continued to disrupt life across Himachal Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning of light to moderate rain in most parts of the state on Wednesday. However, districts like Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Mandi saw spells of heavy to intense rainfall during the day.
Other districts like Chamba, Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Kullu also received light to moderate showers.
Due to the persistent rain, the authorities in Shimla district had shut down all educational institutions in six subdivisions, Chopal, Kumarsain, Rampur, Sunni, Jubbal, and Theog, for August 6. This included all government and private schools, colleges, ITIs, and Anganwadi centres. The move was taken under the Disaster Management Act to ensure student safety and avoid any accidents.
The decision came as many areas in these subdivisions had seen continuous rainfall since midnight. In Theog, the rain began last night, prompting officials to ask all school staff to follow standing government orders.
Other subdivisions in districts like Solan and Sirmaur also closed institutions due to the weather conditions. Meanwhile, the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway remained closed due to landslides between Mandi and Kullu.
According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), the monsoon this year has already claimed 194 lives between June 20 and August 5. Of these, 108 deaths were directly linked to rain-related incidents. So far, the state has suffered massive damage, with reported losses amounting to over Rs 1,85,000 lakh.
