While the exact number of fatalities remains unconfirmed pending ongoing search and rescue operations, the minister stated that retrieving bodies and restoring connectivity in the affected regions are currently the government’s top priorities.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall across various states, including Gujarat, West Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, and Meghalaya, anticipating severe weather conditions that may persist until August 7.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a financial aid package of ₹50,000 for families impacted by the flash floods resulting from the torrential rains.
As the situation unfolds, the IMD has forecasted isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall across regions such as Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa, particularly on Saturday.
The agency has also alerted residents about potential thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh.
In Maharashtra, a red alert has been issued for Satara district, warning residents of expected heavy rain on August 3 and 4, while Palghar and Pune districts are also under alert for severe rainfall on August 4.
The IMD predicts isolated areas in Vidarbha will experience heavy rainfall on August 3.
The forecast remains grim, with predictions of further isolated extremely heavy rainfall in Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa on August 4, and widespread light to moderate rain across Coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, and Kerala over the next five days.
In Kerala, the situation remains dire as the state continues to recover from the devastating Wayanad landslide tragedy, which has claimed over 300 lives.
The IMD anticipates heavy rainfall at isolated locations until August 5, exacerbating the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Recent weather patterns have resulted in significantly increased rainfall across multiple states. In the past 24 hours, areas such as Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, and Coastal Karnataka have recorded very heavy rainfalls.
Meanwhile, Kerala, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and several northeastern states have also faced substantial rainfall, raising concerns over possible flooding and landslides.
