Himachal to get ‘Kangra Village’ near Vankhandi Zoo.

In a major push to boost tourism in Himachal Pradesh, the state government has announced plans to develop a cultural tourism hub named ‘Kangra Village’ near the upcoming Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park in Vankhandi, Dehra. Modeled after Rajasthan’s iconic Chokhi Dhani, the proposed village will showcase the rich art, cuisine, and cultural heritage of the Kangra region.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday visited the site to review progress on the zoo project and finalise future development plans. During his visit, he will lay the foundation stones for several key facilities, including an animal hospital, a quarantine building, a food commissary, Van Vaibhav Path, and various animal enclosures.

The Rs 600-crore project, being developed under the Himachal Pradesh Zoo Conservation and Breeding Society, is one of the most ambitious eco-tourism initiatives in the state. The zoo, once complete, will be India’s first IGBC-certified green zoological park and will feature a walk-in aviary, monorail safari, animal enclosures, and immersive visitor experiences spread over 180 hectares.

A cultural destination in the making

The proposed Kangra Village will be located outside the zoo premises and aims to extend the tourist experience beyond wildlife. Much like Chokhi Dhani celebrates Rajasthani culture, this village will spotlight traditional Kangri architecture, folk music and dance, and local crafts.

Key features planned for 'Kangra Village' include:

  • An amphitheater for live performances showcasing Kangra's folk art, music, and dance
  • Traditional food courts and stalls serving authentic Himachali cuisine from different regions of the state
  • Craft zones and interactive exhibits highlighting local art, weaving, and pottery
  • Special entertainment areas for families and children
  • Cultural trails and heritage walkways inspired by local village life

Boost to tourism and self-employment

Officials believe this twin development—an international-level zoo alongside a culturally immersive village—will create a major tourism hub in Kangra district, with strong potential for local employment generation.

“This integrated model of eco-tourism and cultural heritage will not only attract tourists from across the country but also provide sustainable livelihood opportunities to local artisans, performers, and vendors,” an official from the forest department said.

The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is executing the zoo’s civil infrastructure, while HIMUDA (Himachal Pradesh Housing and Urban Development Authority) is handling the construction of the boundary wall and other supporting facilities. The government is also providing grant-in-aid support for the entire project.

With the foundation stones being laid and active review by the Chief Minister, officials expect construction activity to ramp up swiftly. Both the zoo and Kangra Village are targeted for phased completion over the next few years.

Once operational, the area is expected to emerge as a landmark tourism destination on the state map—blending conservation, culture, and community development in one holistic experience.
