Police in Chamoli have detained a key accused in the Himgiri Plantation scam after 25 years, an official said. Chamoli Superintendent of Police Surjit Singh Panwar said that Ravindra Mohan had been on the run since 2001.
He was arrested by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the police from Phata area in Rudraprayag district.
The police said efforts are still underway to trace and arrest the other main accused, Rakesh Mohan.
As per SP Panwar, a complaint was filed in 2001 by Shiv Prasad at the Gopeshwar Police Station against Ravindra Mohan and his brother Rakesh Mohan.
According to the complaint, the two accused brothers had set up a company named Himgiri Plantation in 1993. They had promised investors high returns, including doubling their money in a short time, which later turned out to be a fraud. In 2001, both the accused were on the run after allegedly cheating people of lakhs of rupees.
On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code for criminal breach of trust and cheating.
Both brothers were later declared fugitives and non-bailable warrants were issued against them by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Chamoli.
The accused remained untraceable until a recent tip-off suggested that Ravindra Mohan would attend a private event in his native area. Acting on the tip-off, the police laid a trap and arrested him.
After his arrest, Ravindra Mohan was produced before the court and sent to jail. Panwar said a focused campaign is underway to arrest Rakesh Mohan as well.
