A 28-year-old man from Hisar district in Haryana, who lost his life in the Russia-Ukraine war, was cremated in his native place on Wednesday, police said.
According to police, the body of Sonu was brought to Madanheri village early in the morning.
Family members said Sonu had been deceitfully recruited into the Russian army and then sent to fight in the Ukraine war.
Sonu’s cousin Anil said the family recently received a call from a Russian army commander, who informed them that Sonu was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack. The officer told them that Sonu’s body would be airlifted to India and would arrive by Wednesday morning.
The family had reached Delhi airport on Tuesday night to receive the body. It arrived on Wednesday morning and was taken to the village by ambulance for the last rites.
Sonu’s mother, Kamlesh Devi, said, “We never imagined Sonu would leave us like this. He went abroad for work but was trapped and killed through fraud. We want justice and request the government to bring back all Indians still stranded there.”
Anil said Sonu had travelled to Russia in May 2024 to study a foreign language course. Another youth from the same village had also gone with him.
He added that Sonu last spoke to his family on September 3, telling them that he was being forcibly conscripted into the Russian army and sent to the Ukrainian front.
