Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda extended his support to the demands of protesting farmers and students, urging the government to engage in dialogue with the agitating farmers and resolve their concerns. Hooda said the farmers were demanding what the BJP had itself promised before coming to power.
“To gain power, the BJP had pledged to implement the Swaminathan Commission recommendations and provide MSP based on the C2 formula. Later, in an effort to end the farmers' protest, the government had also promised to enact a law guaranteeing MSP,” he said.
However, the government had failed to fulfil its promises, he alleged, adding that farmers were once again being forced to launch an agitation.
“The government must immediately engage in dialogue with the farmers and find a resolution to their demands. Due cognizance must also be taken of the farmers' objections regarding the trade deal with the United States,” Hooda said.
Hooda also condemned the alleged lathi-charge on students protesting against the paper leak in Delhi. He said that in a democracy, everyone had the right to hold peaceful protests and raise their demands before the government.
“Resorting to lathi-charge and the use of force against protesting students is entirely undemocratic,” he said. The Congress leader said the government should take action against those responsible for the paper leak instead of targeting students appearing for examinations.
“Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should accept moral responsibility for the paper leak and immediately resign from his post,” Hooda said.
