Former Haryana Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Monday expressed support for the demands of sanitation workers and urged the state government to immediately start a dialogue with them.

Responding to a notice issued by the Assembly Speaker, Hooda said the demands raised by sanitation workers were genuine and should be accepted so that the ongoing strike could be resolved at the earliest.

He said the sanitation situation across Haryana had deteriorated badly due to the strike. “Piles of garbage have accumulated everywhere, with waste lying scattered across roads and streets. Compounding this is the impact of the rains, creating a looming threat of the outbreak of dangerous diseases. Despite this alarming situation, the BJP government remains oblivious, turning a blind eye to the crisis,” Hooda alleged.

“This constitutes not merely an act of injustice against sanitation workers, but rather a reckless compromise with the health and well-being of the entire state of Haryana. During the tenure of the Congress government, 10,000 rural and 11,000 urban sanitation workers were recruited. However, it is unfortunate that the BJP government, far from undertaking new recruitments, has failed to even take cognisance of the existing workers' demands,” he added.

Hooda also raised the issue of wheat procurement, saying farmers’ produce, referred to as 'yellow gold', was lying in 'mandis' across Haryana. He said proper arrangements for procurement were yet to be ensured and delays in lifting and transportation had led to late payments to farmers.

“The government’s tall claims regarding smooth procurement and timely payments have once again been exposed. The procurement process has not been completed on time, and farmers are still waiting for their dues,” he said.
