The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has accused Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda Police Station in Hoshiarpur, of attempting to extort $400,000 from a US-based family.
According to the FBI, the officer allegedly threatened to falsely implicate the family in a murder case in India if they did not pay the money. The agency has shared details of the case on its official website and also released a video statement.
DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla said the Punjab Police learned about the case through the FBI's Los Angeles webpage. He said Gurinderjit Singh Nagra has been transferred to the Police Lines, while the inquiry has been handed over to an officer outside Hoshiarpur to ensure an impartial investigation. SP (Detective) Jalandhar Vineet Ahlawat has been asked to conduct the probe and submit a report at the earliest.
Reacting to the allegations, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Majithia on X wrote “Just as the FBI sought the extradition of Goldy Brar, Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, a Punjab Police officer has now also come under the FBI's scanner. The Punjab Police, once known for its reputation, has today become a symbol of global embarrassment."
Congress MLA from Bholath, Sukhpal Khaira, also criticised the incident. He said the alleged extortion case involving a Punjab Police officer was a serious blot on the force and raised questions about its functioning.
