A violent attack at Darjeeling District Hospital on Monday night has left the assistant superintendent, the second-in-command of the stat-run healthcare facility, seriously injured and admitted to the ICU.
The incident, which took place within the hospital premises, has caused panic among patients and their relatives.
According to eyewitnesses, as Ujjwal Dey, the assistant superintendent, entered the hospital, a health worker named Samarna Rai suddenly attacked him from behind with a khukri (a knife). “Dey collapsed from the assault, bleeding heavily. Hospital staff and bystanders quickly rushed to his aid and transported him to the emergency room, where he required four stitches on his head,” said a police officer..
The accused, Rai, later admitted to the attack, alleging that Dey had unethically transferred him from one department to another. He claimed that the assault was an act of revenge.
Following the incident, Rajesh Chauhan, in-charge of the GTA health department, arrived at the hospital and strongly condemned the attack. "This kind of violence will not be tolerated. The police will take necessary action as per the law," he stated.
The attack has raised serious concerns regarding security within the hospital. Authorities have assured that an investigation is underway to determine how the assailant was able to carry a weapon into the hospital and to prevent such incidents in the future.
