Hyderabad’s skyline got a splash of color on Friday as the Hot Air Balloon Festival officially kicked off at the Golconda Golf Club. The event, which is set to run until January 18, is the latest addition to Telangana’s tourism push, featuring 15 international-standard balloons.
State Tourism and Culture Minister Jupally Krishna Rao didn’t just cut the ribbon; he joined the opening flight, spending about 90 minutes drifting over the city. The ride covered 13 kilometers, starting near the historic Golconda Fort and touching down on the outskirts of Appajiguda. After landing, the Minister described the aerial tour as "truly memorable," noting that it gives a completely different perspective of Hyderabad's landscape.
Speaking to the media, Rao explained that the state is trying to strike a balance between tradition and modern adventure. While the recently concluded Kite and Sweet Festival was all about heritage and hospitality, he sees the Hot Air Balloon and Drone Festivals as a way to show off a more tech-savvy, future-oriented side of Telangana. The goal, he said, is to make "Destination Telangana" a global brand that appeals to travelers looking for more than just a standard sightseeing tour.
The festival is being managed by the Telangana Tourism Development Corporation, with Managing Director Kranthi Valluri and other senior officials present for the launch. Over the next two days, the department expects the balloons to be a major draw for both locals and tourists looking for a bit of adventure.
