The Monsoon session of the state Assembly today began with a walkout by the opposition BJP on the issue of the worsening law and order situation in the state.
The BJP Legislature Party demanded an adjournment motion for discussion on the law and order situation in the state, which was not allowed.
After the walkout, the leader of the Opposition, Jai Ram Thakur told media persons that the latest incident of mob lynching of three youths in Baddi, leading to the death of one of them and grievous injuries to two others who were admitted to PGI and the hospital in Panchkula, on Monday, indicates towards the worsening situation.
Before this, there was a firing incident in Bilaspur court allegedly by some goons hired from Punjab with the involvement of the son of a former MLA. Such blatant incidents are going on and on, but the government is not taking anything seriously.
He said that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the Baddi episode had to do with the drug mafia.
“It is not good news for Himachal Pradesh. The CM admits drug media is involved, but action must be taken. Why only three accused have been arrested in the Baddi incident? Why were 15 others, who were seen attacking the youths with sticks in videos not arrested? They are also part of the drug mafia, but the government is protecting some of them. We want the government to reply to this?” Thakur said.
He said since the Congress government took over in Himachal, the crime incidents have increased manifold and the government had put the entire Police on taking care of the security of the Congress leaders or harassing the BJP MLAs, tapping their phones.
“In Police headquarters Shimla, there are at least 25 officers, who have not been given any work. They have been given the posting of Leave Reserve. They do not have a single chair to sit on. What is happening?” the former BJP Chief Minister questioned.
He said the Chief Minister and the Parliamentary Affairs minister tried to divert the attention from the issue raised by the BJP. “We wanted to take up the law and order situation issue under rule 67 and were not allowed. So we staged a walkout. It seemed the Speaker wanted, but the government did not want to let it happen,” he said.
Earlier on Monday, the BJP had skipped the all-party meeting called by the Speaker of Himachal Assembly.
The session from 27 August to 9 September will have ten sittings.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu criticised the BJP walkout over the demand for adjournment motion on a Baddi incident, wherein it was a fight between two drug traffickers, one of whom came from Haryana.
He said rule 67 on adjournment motion meant that everything else should be adjourned and discussion should be allowed on a most important matter. He said issues like disasters, which have claimed so many lives and caused much damage, are the ones which are most important in this regard.
But the BJP demanded an adjournment motion on the Baddi incident, and that also when a discussion was scheduled on disaster under rule 130 later.
He said the Leader of Opposition, Jai Ram Thakur seemed confused. He said the discussion on law and order could be allowed in some other rule, not under rule 67. "The BJP members came back to the House within 10 minutes after staging a walkout. This means they just wanted to stage a walkout and were not interested in the discussion," he said.
