Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited Pong Dam in Kangra district today for bird watching and to tour the ancient temples at Bathu-Ki-Lari, a popular tourist site. He highlighted the area's great potential for tourism and shared that the state government is working hard to boost tourism in the region.

Sukhu explained that migratory birds from Siberia and Mongolia visit Pong Dam every year, attracting tourists from across India. He instructed the forest department to ensure the safety of these birds.

To make the area more accessible for tourists, two boats have already been deployed, and two more speedboats will be added soon. The government also plans to develop basic facilities for tourists.

The Chief Minister added that the region has seen a rise in tourist visits, with nearly 30,000 people coming last year. He mentioned that efforts are underway to introduce water sports at the Regional Water Center near the Pong Dam Barrage to further enhance tourism.

In the Basa area of Jawali Assembly constituency, a Wildlife Interpretation Centre has been set up with an investment of Rs 3.20 crore. This centre aims to educate visitors about wildlife conservation and the migratory patterns of the birds.

The centre offers accommodations and dormitories for students, providing an opportunity for them to learn about Pong’s biodiversity.

This is a rise compared to the 85,000 birds recorded during the same period last year. Around 100 species of migratory birds visit the dam annually, and so far, 85 species have already been spotted this season.

Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Prof. Chander Kumar, Ayush Minister Yadvinder Goma, Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa, Superintendent of Police Ashok Ratan, and other officials were also present at the event.
