Himachal Pradesh has introduced FaceAuth – an Aadhaar-based face authentication mechanism that allows the distribution of ration to eligible beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in a more time-efficient and streamlined manner. It is the first state to introduce the digital mechanism for giving ration.
The new facility uses a mobile camera via an app installed on the Fair Price Shop (FPS) owner’s smartphone to enable direct facial authentication of beneficiaries.

Gokul Butail, principal advisor to the CM, said that until now, authentication was held using OTP-based or biometric methods. But, failures in SMS delivery and frequent biometric mismatches at the UIDAI’s end were causing inconveniences and delays to the beneficiaries.
“In a significant technological advancement, the department of Digital Technologies and Governance (DDTG), Himachal Pradesh, has introduced Aadhaar-based face authentication for the distribution of ration to eligible beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS),” Butail said.
He also stressed on the initiative signaling the state’s commitment to using digital technology to enhance public service delivery and promote inclusive access to essential services.
The new system is expected to improve the authentication success rate and reduce verification time, ensuring a faster and more efficient ration distribution process, the statement added.
