'The White Truth', a web series produced by the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti (HGVS) to create awareness among youth about the harmful effects of drug abuse, will be screened in all government schools and colleges in Himachal Pradesh in view of the increasing drug menace in the state.
The Director of Higher Education and Director of School Education have written to principals of colleges, schools and other government educational institutions across the state, directing them to screen the web series amid growing concern over drug abuse. The aim is to effectively disseminate the message among youth and society. Principals have been asked to show the web series to students, teachers and staff during special awareness sessions on drug menace or at any other suitable time in the institutions.
The Director General of Police has also directed district police chiefs to widely disseminate the web series at all levels to increase awareness.
The eye-opening web series 'The White Truth' was recently launched at the state level, and its episodes are being circulated through social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. It has been produced by Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti, an organisation that played a major role in the literacy campaign in Himachal Pradesh in the early 1990s and has since remained committed to addressing social issues.
The HGVS has been actively sensitising people about the increasing drug menace to prevent youth from falling prey to drug abuse. The web series 'The White Truth' is a thought-provoking and collective step to address drug abuse in society, driven by the energy, vision and passion of committed youth. It is directed by Suryansh Pundir, while Amit (Banni) is co-director.
The series aims to highlight various aspects of the growing drug menace, including the harmful impact of drug use on youth, underlying causes of addiction, social stigma and denial, the role of parenting, the dark side of the drug trade, systemic loopholes and failures, and pathways to recovery and reintegration into society.
The purpose of the series is to awaken society and inspire collective action against the deepening drug crisis. In recent years, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a rise in cases of drug trafficking and abuse, with school and college students increasingly getting trapped in the nexus. The easy availability of synthetic drugs, particularly Chitta, has become a serious concern, while drug-related deaths have also shown an upward trend.
Though the state government has shown commitment to curb the drug menace through awareness drives such as walkathons and stricter enforcement against traffickers, significant results have yet to be achieved. Drug networks have made deep inroads into Himachal, highlighted recently when four police personnel, part of a task force to check drug trafficking, were caught allegedly smuggling drugs.
“It is a good initiative by the state government to screen this web series in schools and colleges. Students often fall prey to drugs due to peer pressure and easily get trapped in organised networks targeting young people. Along with other government efforts, spreading awareness through this web series will certainly awaken youth about the dangers of drug consumption,” said HGVS State Secretary Satyawan Pundir.
It is pertinent to mention that HGVS also started another anti-drug campaign, Mothers Against Addiction, on International Women’s Day. The campaign was launched by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in Nahan and aimed to sensitise and educate mothers so they can better address the issue of drug abuse within families.
