Human skeletal remains, including two skulls bearing handwritten names, were discovered inside an abandoned house near Anakuzhi Road at Poonkulam West in Thiruvananthapuram district on Thursday, prompting a police investigation, officials said.
The remains were found within the jurisdiction of Thiruvallam Police Station. According to police, the house belongs to Abdullah, a native of Thycaud, who had entrusted the maintenance of the property to a resident, Radhakrishnan.
Radhakrishnan reportedly discovered the skeletal remains when he visited the property to collect jackfruit from the yard. He noticed skulls, rib bones, leg bones, and around 25 other skeletal parts placed under and around an old plastic cover, along with pieces of charcoal.
Police said one intact skull had the name “Vasu” written on the back, while another skull, which had been cut into two parts, had the name “Asna” inscribed on the inside.
Following the discovery, police registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to determine the origin of the bones and the significance of the names written on them. The skeletal remains have been sent to the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, for forensic examination.
Officials said scientific analysis would be required to confirm whether the bones are real human remains and to determine their age, sex, and other identifying characteristics.
Investigators are also exploring the possibility that the bones could be anatomical specimens used for medical education. Police said that real human skeletons are sometimes supplied to medical students for academic purposes, and students may write names on individual bones for identification.
Authorities said further clarity on the matter would emerge after the forensic report is completed.
