On Friday morning, an idol of Goddess Durga was allegedly desecrated at a Puja pandal in Hyderabad’s Nampally Exhibition Grounds, located within the Begum Bazar police station limits.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Madhavi Latha condemned the incident and demanded swift action from the police.

She called the act uncivilised and communal, insisting that it was premeditated, as no one could access the grounds without the intention to cause harm.

Latha warned the police that if no action was taken within 24 hours, she would stage a protest at the station. She stated, "The incident is disgraceful. The authorities must act swiftly. We requested a prompt investigation, and the police assured us they would find those responsible within 24 hours. If not, I will hold a dharna at the police station.”

She added that the pandal had been a place of worship for many during Navratri. She noted that on the previous night, a Garba dance event was held there. However, between 3 and 5 am, some unknown individuals entered the premises and vandalised the idol, breaking its hands and causing widespread damage.

Latha condemned their actions, describing them as anti-social and asserting that such individuals are unfit to live in the country. She vowed that those responsible would be found.

The vandals also tampered with the hundi (donation box), which caused the idol’s hand to fall off. Local authorities have since restored the idol, but the damage has raised concerns over security during the festival period.

Latha’s call for action emphasised the importance of respecting religious sentiments, especially during a sacred time like Navratri. The BJP leader urged authorities to ensure that such incidents do not repeat, and she stressed the need for enhanced security at religious sites during festivals.

The police are currently investigating the incident and have assured the public that they are reviewing footage and other evidence to identify those involved. Community leaders and devotees expressed their outrage, demanding justice and stricter measures to protect religious symbols.

The situation has highlighted the tensions surrounding religious events and the importance of maintaining peace and order. Authorities are expected to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
