A worst form of violence against a woman has been witnessed in the Nallakunta region of the city of Hyderabad, where a man allegedly set his wife ablaze right in front of their kids a day before Christmas. The accused, Venkatesh, is also known to have pushed his six-year-old daughter, who tried to save her mother, into the fire and escaped. Although the girl is safe with only minor injuries and is undergoing treatment at a hospital, Triveni, the accused’s wife, unfortunately succumbed to the serious burns on the spot.
The couple had an arranged marriage and two very young children. Neighbours reported heated harassment by Venkatesh to the extent that Triveni had to move back in with her parents recently because of the abuse and harassment. Nonetheless, Venkatesh had reconciled with Triveni and promised to change his behaviour for good, although this did not happen as Triveni's death occurred during this violence.
People talked about Triveni as a strong woman who was working as a hotel staff member or in private houses to educate her children because her husband, Venkatesh, was either absent or engaged in some sort of illegal activities. According to a neighbor named Lakshmi, Triveni had even bought her husband a motorcycle worth over a lakh to help him get on his feet, but he sold it for a mere ₹15,000 to fund his drinking habit. The tragedy has sparked intense outrage in the locality, with many pointing out that Triveni had previously sought help from the police and women’s protection cells during earlier altercations.
The Hyderabad police have registered a murder case and have launched a massive search operation to track down Venkatesh.
