The University of Hyderabad witnessed protests on Sunday as students demonstrated against the alleged auction of 400 acres of land bordering the campus.
Police detained 53 students, who were later released, following a standoff at the disputed site.
The protest erupted after students spotted earthmovers clearing the area.
Some climbed onto the machines, chanting slogans and demanding that authorities retreat.
According to police, the students obstructed government officials and assaulted police personnel.
"Cases will be filed against those involved in obstructing officials from their duty," a police officer stated.
Claims of forceful detention
A student alleged she was forcibly detained.
“We just wanted to know why they are razing the forest land. However, they resorted to forcefully detaining us and touched me inappropriately,” she claimed.
The University of Hyderabad Students’ Union (UoHSU) condemned the police action.
In a statement, the union accused authorities of disregarding concerns about the ecological and territorial integrity of the campus.
"JCBs are at the eastern side of the campus, and they are clearing off the land," a student representative claimed.
The Telangana government reportedly plans to develop the land into an IT park. A section of students and activists opposed the move, citing environmental concerns.
University’s stance
However, university authorities denied the institution’s claim over the land. “The disputed land is not part of the university’s legally allotted area,” officials said.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the auction and land use.
