In the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B), Government of India, has issued a media advisory to media houses in Jammu and Kashmir, urging them to exercise caution while reporting on ongoing security operations.

The advisory, dated April 26, 2024 (Letter No. 41015/3/2024-BC-III) and reiterated on May 1, comes amid concerns over the spread of fake news that could unintentionally assist hostile elements, compromise operational effectiveness, and endanger the safety of security personnel.

To curb this, media houses are requested to refrain from real-time coverage, dissemination of visuals, or reporting based on source-based information related to defence operations or movement in particular.

As per the advisory, “all media houses are requested to implement the media advisory issued by the Government of India, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and follow the security measures while publishing any news about ongoing operations in J&K.”

This comes days after what has now been called the worst terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in the past 25 years.

Additionally, experts have also said the attack is the second largest after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

On April 22, terrorists opened fire on tourists in the “mini Switzerland” of Kashmir Pahalgam, killing 26 people, mostly tourists.

While the security forces have launched raids on hundreds of locations to track down the terrorists and also destroy their OGW and UGW support from the Kashmir Valley.

However, the attackers have not yet been tracked or killed since the attack took place over more than a week ago.
