In a major counter-espionage operation, Rajasthan Intelligence has arrested a civilian employee posted at the Chabua Air Force Station in Assam for allegedly passing sensitive information to Pakistani handlers. The operation, conducted jointly with Air Force Intelligence (New Delhi), has reportedly exposed a Pakistan-backed espionage network operating in India.

The accused, Sumit Kumar (36), a Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) at the Chabua station, was taken into custody at the Central Interrogation Centre in Jaipur on Sunday under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Prafull Kumar said the investigation began in January 2026 with the arrest of another suspect in Jaisalmer. Interrogation and subsequent inquiries revealed Kumar’s continuous contact with Pakistani intelligence operatives since 2023. He allegedly shared confidential details about Air Force installations, including fighter aircraft locations, missile systems, and personnel-related information, in exchange for money.

Officials added that Kumar also assisted Pakistani handlers in creating social media accounts using mobile numbers registered in his name, facilitating the transfer of sensitive data. The breach reportedly extended beyond Chabua to other defence facilities, including the Nal Air Force Station in Bikaner.

“The accused had been passing on sensitive information for nearly three years,” said a senior investigating officer. “His position allowed him access to critical operational details, which were relayed to Pakistani handlers via social media platforms.”

The arrest underscores the growing threat of foreign espionage targeting India’s defence infrastructure. Investigations are ongoing to map the wider network and identify any other individuals involved.

The Rajasthan Intelligence confirmed that multiple agencies are coordinating to prevent further breaches and have flagged security protocols at vulnerable Air Force installations across the country.

This case comes amid heightened concerns over national security and reflects increased vigilance by Indian intelligence agencies to detect and neutralise espionage attempts linked to foreign powers.
