Noted Bengali singer, lyricist, and musician Pratul Mukhopadhyay passed away on Saturday morning at the state-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. He was 83.
Hospital authorities confirmed that Mukhopadhyay breathed his last around 10 am. The celebrated artiste had been admitted with age-related ailments and had been on ventilation support as his condition deteriorated.
A senior doctor at the hospital stated, “Mukhopadhyay was admitted in the first week of January with a lung infection. Despite intensive care, his condition worsened.”
Two days prior to his demise, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited him at the hospital following the Budget session in the Assembly. As news of his passing emerged, two state ministers reached the hospital on Saturday morning.
Mukhopadhyay, best known for his iconic song “Ami Banglar Gaan Gai”, was born in 1942 in Barishal, now in Bangladesh.
He penned his first song in 1963 and was actively involved in the Naxalite movement during that period. Later, he relocated to West Bengal and made a mark in the cultural landscape. His first album, “Jete Hobe”, was released in 1994.
Widely respected for his poetic compositions and soul-stirring voice, Mukhopadhyay’s works resonated deeply with the masses. His contribution to Bengali music and activism through his songs remains unparalleled.
