In the wake of the celebrations pertaining to International Women’s Day, which passed by a few days ago, Telangana has taken a step towards empowering women and children.

A recent partnership between the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and Kriti Social Initiatives, a local non-profit organisation dedicated to community upliftment, has come together for a collaboration.

As a part of this venture, 20 refurbished computers from ICRISAT were donated to the Kriti charitable trust, which will benefit the latter’s initiatives in Shaikpet, Khairtabad and Secunderabad mandals of Telangana.

On the occasion, Dr Jacqueline Hughes, the Director General of ICRISAT emphasised the importance of the collaboration. “These computers will not only provide valuable resources for educational initiatives but also serve as tools for empowerment. Women hailing from economically vulnerable sections of the society will acquire new skills and get new opportunities. Young students will get the means to acquire knowledge which will unlock their full potential,” he said.

Sreelata Chebrol, Trustee of Kriti Social Initiatives noted the importance of computer literacy skills in today’s world on the occasion.

“The donation of these 20 computers is timely and will impact many women and children.. I am hoping that this collaboration with ICRISAT expands further which will go a long way in cementing opportunities to provide free education to many underprivileged individuals,” said Chebrol.

Mr Angshu Sengupta, Deputy Director General, Corporate Services, said: “At ICRISAT, our work revolves around community empowerment, with a special emphasis on the uplift of marginalised women and groups in the semi-arid tropics. We are grateful to be able to create an impact on society.”

Giving away computers was part of a wider ceremony, which saw representatives from local financial institutions, IDBI and Kotak Banks, which championed sustainable practices through the donation of electric vehicles.

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) specialises in improving dryland farming and agri-food systems. The Institute was established in 1972 which works with global partners to develop innovative science-backed solutions to overcome hunger, malnutrition, poverty and environmental degradation.
